Joan Durbin, MD, PhD

Medical Director

Dr. Joan Durbin completed her MD and PhD in Microbiology at Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ in 1989 and began the Experimental Pathology residency program at New York University that same year. This program allowed MD PhDs to train in both anatomic pathology and research during their residency.

Dr. Durbin did her postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. David Levy, and with his group developed a mouse lacking a gene essential for the function of the antiviral response. She went from New York University to a faculty position in the Pediatrics Department at the Ohio State University, which is housed in the freestanding Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. There she worked as a pathologist and established her research laboratory which focused on immunity to respiratory virus infection, and specifically the role of Interferons in the innate and adaptive immune responses. After leaving Ohio State University in 2009, she continued her research and her role as an attending pathologist at New York University, and later at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Durbin joined OncoC4 as Medical Director in 2022, overseeing ONC-392 clinical trials.
